Volunteers

Thank you to all our volunteers who have made the Superhero the event it is today. This year many of our lovely marshalls are back again, but we are always on the look out for more. Last years prize for best marshalls went to Vicky Ringer and Pip Case who excelled themselves by standing in the wind and rain on the beach with an enormous grin on their faces for every competitor. If you would like to be involved please contact us at jess@norfolksuperhero.co.uk.

Here is a brief guide to what the marshalls are expected to do as outlined by our chief marshall, 'The Edge'....

GUIDE TO BEING A SUPERHERO MARSHAL!

What do I have to do?
You must be at the safety briefings on Friday 22nd June  at 6pm so that you know how the event works. You will be given a sheet with your own timings and special instructions. You must be in your given position at the times stated and please stay there until the given end time, or advised by the committee. At some marshal points you will be asked to check the competitors off as they pass you. Each competitor will have a number which they must shout to you as they pass.

Race marshal duties
You will be on the course directing/controlling competitors, controlling spectators, controlling traffic, at HQ, on the bar, litter picking.

Party marshal duties
You will be behind the bar, serving food, litter picking/tidying/clearing dinner.

What is the course?
1 mile swim from Gun Hill back into Overy (the competitors will go by boat out to the start)
4 mile kayak round the creeks there are 2 courses – a shorter one for the women’s and mixed teams
45 mile cycle (you will have a map this year it is a new course)
8 mile run to Holkham and back across the beach and the marsh the finish line is opposite the boat house in Overy (you will have a map)

When does it start?
The race starts at approximately 8.00am. You may have to be on site earlier than this.

What time do I have to be there?
Friday night at 6pm for the safety briefings and to pick up your marshal pack. Saturday morning at 7am. Your times for your positions will be on your personal timing sheet in your marshal pack.

And how long for?
On Friday night 6-8pm your supper will be provided. On Saturday 7am-4pm breakfast will be provided and/or 6pm-late dinner will be provided. (extra tickets for dinner must be booked and paid for in advance £20 adult and £5 children)

Will I be on my own?
Marshals will be put into teams of 2 and you may be in a position that has other teams as well. If you have someone you would particularly like to work with please tell us.

What happens in an emergency? What should I do if there’s an accident on the road/in the water?
Quickly assess the situation and then call the appropriate person. 999, HQ or Cath on 07710 160616.  We will have support vehicles on the cycle route. We will have paramedics at HQ.

What do I have to bring with me?
Your mobile phone although reception can be patchy. Anything you will need during the day. You may not always have your car near you so a small rucsac may be useful for essentials. HQ will be manned all day but we cannot be responsible for anything left there.

Do I need to bring lunch/snacks/drinks?
Yes, but supper on Friday, breakfast and dinner on Saturday will be provided if you are on official marshal duties.

Can I bring my child/dog?
We would advise no. You as a marshal must give priority to the safety of the competitors at all times. You must not leave your post unattended at any time.

What do I wear?
Bring warm clothes and waterproofs/sunscreen and hats. You will be given a pink marshal tshirt which must be worn at all times on the top layer so that you can be easily identified by competitors and spectators.
If you already have a marshal tshirt please bring it with you.

Where do I park? And do I have to pay for it?
Parking in Burnham Overy Staithe for competitors and marshals is on the playing field which will be clearly signed. It is free for the day. If you are going into Holkham Park or Lady Anne’s drive at Holkham then you will have to pay. Please hold on to your receipt and give it in at HQ and we will be refunded by Holkham Estate. We will have parking passes for marshals who have to be in that position.

What is in my marshal pack?
Emergency number list and your marshal timetable. The superhero timetable of events, maps of all routes, list of competitors with their team numbers and team names, a first aid kit, pens. (all of this information will also be available in HQ)

And don’t forget that there is a marshal prize for endurance!

The most important thing to remember is you are there, first and foremost, for the safety of the competitors.

You are their first point of contact if they need anything.

You are in pairs so that if one person has to go and deal with an emergency there is another one available.

THANK YOU.
